The Porcelain Pixel (sculpted pixel art)

This page is a gallery intended to hold artwork that is a hybrid of pixel art and digital sculpture. Specifically, I make these by first sculpting models in 3D digital sculpting software and then later post-processing the renders from that sculpting software and/or manually drawing new pixels over the rendered image until the artwork looks like pixel art to my satisfaction. Thus, the technique creates an interesting and unusual hybrid art style. 🧐🎨

The image of a ghostly hand reaching out of a flurry of leaves on the front page of this site was also produced this way, but that image is not duplicated here, for both thematic and pragmatic reasons. It saves energy and reduces server load too. Reducing waste matters!

Also, in case you are curious, the name "The Porcelain Pixel" that I've given this online art gallery was chosen because porcelain is a type of high-end clay, which is what sculptors often work with, and thus the intent is to evoke an analogy embodying the concept of sculpting pixel art instead of making it the usual way. It also sounds like an old tavern name.

Although previously the images of these pixel sculptures were displayed directly on this page, to avoid unintentionally contributing (unwillingly) to the ongoing theft-based AI problem and the automated plagiarism that targets all sites with openly displayed images, it is my policy from now on ( onwards) to only describe the sculptures in text here and instead require that those who wish to view image sets in full must download them through a site that passes through an email barrier that blocks most bots from accessing it, and likewise for all other future site images that aren't used as UI elements.

  1. Hellish Pseudo-Staircase depicts a strange surreal blood-red staircase that rises into a small cage-like cavernous nodule. The edifice appears to glow from within. The aesthetics of the sculpture are such that it is hard to say if it is natural or artificial.
  2. Deepwood Mask is a visage of an otherworldly and dusty-dark forest-green mask, with mouth agape like some kind of surreal forest-dwelling fish or reptile. The flattened reptilian profile of the face emerged spontaneously during sculpting, serendipitously.
